SunTrust agrees $7bn merger deal

SunTrust Banks of Georgia clinched a deal yesterday to buy a bank based in neighbouring Tennessee for $7bn in cash and stock, in the second large merger in the US retail banking industry in less than a week.

In reaching the agreement to buy National Commerce Financial, which is based in Memphis and has $23bn in assets across eight Southern states, SunTrust edged out a competing offer from Fifth Third, the Ohio-based bank.
