A few weeks back, my wife reached the front of a Marks and Spencer supermarket queue, felt in her bag for her money and found nothing there. "I'll have to come back," she told the check-out clerk. "I've left my purse at home."
"I'll pay for you," said the woman behind her, a complete stranger. My wife looked at her in surprise. "It's all right," the woman said. "Do you live locally? Here's my address. Just drop a cheque off." When my wife did so later that day, she thanked the woman for being so kind. "We don't do enough for each other," she replied.
