Global overview: Uncertainty across financial markets

The yen continued to retreat on Tuesday as financial markets remained on tenterhooks ahead of Wednesday’s interest rate decision by the Bank of Japan.

But there was a growing view that whether or not the BoJ raised rates, there was little risk just yet of a sharp unwinding of “carry trades”, in which investors sell low-yielding currencies such as the yen to fund long positions in high-yielders.
