US economic data help Europe close higher

European stocks climbed into positive territory this week as strong economic data from the US gave succour to ailing financial stocks.

Franco-Belgian bank Dexia jumped 9.2 percent to €9.69 following strong results. Its chief executive also scotched suggestions that the company would need more capital.
