Congress cools on further tax rebates

No matter who wins Tuesday’s presidential election, the first order of business when members of Congress return to Washington later this month will be to open discussions on a second package of measures to stimulate the US economy.

Democrats are expected to push for a big boost to infrastructure spending, as well as aid to states and local governments, and further expansions of unemployment insurance and food-stamp programmes.
