President Jacques Chirac this week bounced back to the centre of the French political stage with a flurry of headline-grabbing initiatives.

The 72-year-old president used his traditional New Year meetings with leaders from different social groups to reveal a range of proposals - so freshly designed that they even seemed to catch some of his own ministers off-guard.
