A strike called by Pakistan’s main opposition in protest at violence that left at least 39 people dead at the weekend caused heavy disruption in Karachi and other cities on Monday.

Local businessmen said shops were shut and public transport ground to a halt in the southern port city following the country’s worst political violence in two decades. The government declared a public holiday on Monday and banned public gatherings in the city.
