Top judge warns on high cost of civil litigation

Companies should regard the prospect of getting sucked into highly expensive civil litigation with "horror", the new lord chief justice warned yesterday.

Lord Phillips, who has just become the country's most senior judge, admitted that plans to cut the cost of High Court legal actions, devised by his predecessor Lord Woolf, had had little effect in reducing legal bills.
