UK More cities could gain elected mayors under an overhaul of the rules that govern such contests, to be announced on Wednesday.
Hazel Blears, communities secretary, will propose allowing online petitions to enable people to back referendums for mayors. She believes that this will allow thousands more people to vote for change.
