Taking the Caledonian road to nickel riches

At the entrance to Goro Nickel, a $3.2bn mining project on France’s distant South Pacific territory of New Caledonia, a billboard is regularly updated to show how many hours have been worked without any lost time due to injury – 519,000 at the last count.

Goro Nickel, now owned by Brazil’s CVRD , has had its fair share of delays, cost blow-outs and local opposition.
