Johnny Carson, one of the best loved American television personalities of the 20th century, died on Sunday at the age of 79.

Carson, who hosted NBC's popular late-night talk show, The Tonight Show for three decades, died early on Sunday. A nephew said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. He gave no details on the cause of death, though NBC reported on its website that Carson died of emphysema.
