FTSE powers through 5,100 level

The FTSE powered through the 5,100 level during trading on Wednesday for the first time since late May 2002. Hopes of an early cut in interest rates spurred gains in retailers, housebuilders and financial stocks.

Minutes from the Bank of England’s June meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee showed two of its members had voted for a cut in interest rates, including Charles Bean, the crental bank’s chief economist.
