Plans to promote Britishness suffer setback

Proposals to promote Britishness by relaxing restrictions on the flying of the union flag from government buildings, due to be unveiled by ministers later this week, have suffered an unexpected glitch.

Ministers blocked the promised publication of responses to a consultation on flag-flying days after a backlash by “middle England” generated hundreds of letters of protests, the Financial Times has been told.
