Tough NHS contracts push IT scheme under budget

The giant NHS information technology programme had spent barely half the amount expected by March last year as delays plagued the introduction of an electronic patient record, figures released by the Department of Health show.

However, the tough contracts under which suppliers do not get paid until systems are working, meant the £12.4bn programme was under, not over, budget and those parts of the systems that have been installed successfully are generating real savings, the department said.
