Basque terrorists on Friday burst into the Spanish election campaign by killing a former Socialist town councillor in the Basque country, only two days before Spaniards were due to vote in a closely-fought general election.

The ruling Socialist and opposition Popular parties immediately cancelled their final rallies on Friday evening.
