IBM finds PC way to aid humanitarian projects

One of the first things many of us do when we get up in the morning or arrive at the office is switch on our computer. But for much of the day it is not in use. Whether we are on the telephone, in a meeting, or have popped out for lunch, the machine is awake but inactive.

IBM has harnessed this computer power and put it to good use by making it available free to scientists and researchers through a global network – the World Community Grid. Complex tasks can be broken into small pieces and distributed around the network.
