Scramble for intellectual capital

Insight Product Development, a US-based design consultancy, has long conducted research on Japanese and Korean consumers. But it had not felt the need to establish an office in Asia until about a year ago, when the company began seeing increased demand for market research on Chinese consumers.

This pushed the company, which has designed outdoor lamps for camping gear company Coleman and portable blood donation systems for US healthcare company Baxter, to open its first overseas office this month in Shanghai.
