Fortress Investment Group, a US-based alternative investment group with $26bn in hedge fund and private equity assets under management, on Thursday filed for an initial public offering that could value it at up to $7.5bn.

Fortress said it hoped to sell10 per cent of the group and raise $750m. It will be the first public listing of its kind in the US and will provide a critical test of investor appetite for publicly traded hedge funds.
