US wiretap leak inquiry launched

The US Department of Justice is launching an investigation to try to find out who leaked classified information about a secret eavesdropping operation to the New York Times, a department official said on Friday.

The disclosure earlier this month that President George W. Bush had authorised a covert domestic spying programme set off a firestorm of protest from both Democrats and Republicans, with many lawmakers asking whether it violated the US constitution.
