It is all very well picking a part of the world from which to operate based on, perhaps, the tax regime, political situation, transport links and available workforce. But what about premises? The gradual arrival of the finance industry in Guernsey from the late 1960s resulted in a huge change in St Peter Port.
Happily, as the local government, the States of Guernsey, was – and remains – determined to preserve the character of the island, most of the redevelopment is tasteful. You cannot build new office suites disguised as granite cottages and farmhouses, but you can insist on quality and on regulating what goes up before the first digger engine is started, and that is what the States did.
