Venezuela clinches Spain defence deal

Venezuela on Monday signed a contract with Spain to buy 12 transport aircraft and eight coastal patrol ships to boost its maritime defences, despite US objections.

The deal, worth €1.7bn ($2bn, £1.2bn), will see the transport aircraft supplied by EADS-Casa, the European consortium, and the vessels manufactured at the Spanish government-controlled shipyard Navantia.
