Disillusioned Congo mines chief quits

The western head of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s state-owned mining company resigned on Wednesday on the same day a parliamentary report said widespread fraud was preventing hundreds of millions of dollars in mining revenues from reaching state coffers.

As managing director of Gecamines, Paul Fortin, a Canadian lawyer, was a key player in President Joseph Kabila’s ambitious programmes to develop the resources of one of the world’s most mineral-rich countries.
