This is the age of the train

Suddenly, the train is popular again. The industry has moved from the shadows into the spotlight as well-run, comfortable metro systems have become as important to the world’s expanding cities as their road networks.

Just 20 years ago, most of the world’s metro systems were old, unattractive and becoming dangerous. Suburban and rural trains were draughty, uncomfortable and in rapid decline against surging road traffic.
