Nepal's King Gyanendra, who seized absolute power in February, has released deposed prime minister Sher Behadur Deuba from house arrest, in an apparent easing of the country's state of emergency.

Mr Deuba was released at the weekend alongside a number of other political leaders. He said he hoped the United Nations would "support the efforts of the political parties to restore democracy" in Nepal. Ray Marcelo, New Delhi
