The Big Easy faces a difficult future

It was known as the Big Easy because of its languid pace of life and carefree spirit. Even funerals were considered an opportunity to party, with the dead traditionally honoured by a burst of jazz and a street parade.

But as the city gasps for life beneath 6 metres of water and armed looters roam its few dry streets, it seems unlikely that New Orleans can ever be the same again.
