Italy’s centre-left government on Tuesday appointed a former police chief and a general in charge of army logistics to tackle the rubbish crisis in Naples where local authorities have lost control over some suburbs blockaded by residents.

Romano Prodi, prime minister, also warned local mayors they would face direct rule from Rome unless they resolved the emergency within four months.
