Minister defends remarks on ‘sinister’ ONS

Ministers were embroiled in a row with the official statistics body on Wednesday after accusing it of potentially “sinister” motives in releasing population data on UK residents born abroad.

Opposition parties attacked the government for “bullying” the Office for National Statistics, in spite of having granted it independence last year. The Liberal Democrats called on the Home Office to get its “tanks off the statisticians’ lawn”.
