Sarkozy's broadcasting shake-up envisages French version of BBC

President Nicolas Sarkozy in-tends to give France a version of the BBC as part of a radical broadcasting shake-up he des-cribed yesterday as a "policy of civilisation".

By the new measures, advertising on France's two public television stations would be scrapped to be replaced by revenue from taxes on mobile phone operators, internet service providers, and a levy on the advertising revenues of private television channels.
