To many who have observed Chicago's two big futures exchanges over the years, the sight of men and women in colourful trading jackets has been emblematic of what they seem to do: shout themselves hoarse trading pork bellies.
If there is one thing that the Chicago Mercantile Exchange has confirmed once and for all by approaching the Chicago Board of Trade about a possible merger, it is how hopelessly out of date that image is.
