Ontario on Monday unveiled a multi-billion dollar investment plan to restart two nuclear reactors that have sat idle in the Canadian province for nearly a decade.

In the latest sign of a global resurgence in nuclear power, Bruce Power, Canada's largest nuclear generator, said it would invest C$4.25bn (US$3.6bn, €3bn, £2bn) to rebuild the two units, to start up in 2009 and operate for 25 years. Ontario dominates Canada's nuclear industry, with 18 of its 20 reactors. The provincial government is expected to give the go-ahead to build new nuclear power stations, following a report from the Ontario Power Authority due in December.
