Brazil Senate chief survives scandal

Brazilian senators on Wednesday night voted to absolve Renan ­Calheiros, Senate president, of corruption charges that have dogged him and paralysed the upper chamber since May.

Mr Calheiros was acquitted in a secret ballot by 40 votes in his favour, 35 against and six abstentions – a wide margin of victory in what was expected to be a close vote.
