Bangladeshi poll seen as litmus for elections

In the first test of the Bangladesh military-backed government’s ability to deliver credible parliamentary elections, about one million voters will on Monday cast their ballots in local elections seen as a litmus for the restoration of democracy in the emergency-ruled country.

The polls – for four city corporations and nine municipalities – come ahead of elections due in December, but for which the government has yet to set a date.
