China and Taiwan split by more than the Strait

When China and Taiwan resumed direct flights this month after an almost 60-year hiatus it was “a dream come true”, according to Yang Jianrong, a Chinese official in Shanghai.

China’s leadership has long pushed for a closer embrace with the self-ruled island, arguing that this would quickly allow the Taiwanese to get to know China and help dispel fears about the mainland.
