Bank defies Tehran desire for lower rates

Iran's central bank has struck a blow to the populist policies of Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad and decided not to lower interest rates further following months of power struggle.

Tahmasb Mazaheri, the chief bank governor, notified banks at the weekend that they could keep their lending rates at 12 per cent in defiance of forceful orders by the president who would like to see cheap loans extended to underpin his economic agenda.
