Beijing imposes tariffs on fertiliser

Beijing has imposed tariffs as high as 135 per cent on exports of fertiliser in the first concrete response by Asia’s largest food producer and consumer to the emerging regional crisis in the supply of farm produce.

The tariffs, which will apply from April 20 for about six months to cover the planting season, is a clear signal that Beijing is ready to take action to try to limit the impact of regional food price rises and shortages from hitting its own markets.
