Bank's chief economist keeps rates vote under wraps

In his first public appearance since joining the monetary policy committee, Spencer Dale, the Bank of England's new chief economist, yesterday played his cards close to his chest on the level of interest rates needed to return inflation to the 2 per cent target.

As the new MPC member, who has replaced Rachel Lomax on the interest rate-setting committee, he could be a swing voter on rates in coming months.
