SPD nominates Gabriel as chairman

The leadership of Germany’s Social Democrats on Monday nominated Sigmar Gabriel, outgoing environment minister, as chairman, as the party looked for new direction following an historic general election defeat.

Mr Gabriel, 50, is set to replace Franz Müntefering who indicated last week that he would vacate the post at a party conference in November.
