Share issue plan boosts Barclays

Barclays shares rose by more than 3 per cent on Monday after the bank issued a reassuring trading update and confirmed it was considering a share issue to strengthen its balance sheet.

The bank said group pre-tax profits in May were ahead of the monthly run rate for 2007, implying it made more than £590m in profit last month.
