Countries pledge $1.9bn in bird flu fight

The world’s top public health authorities stressed on Wednesday the need to devise a strategy to allocate funds pledged to fight avian flu, particularly in Southeast Asia, while ensuring accountability and transparency.

As the bird flu forum ended in Beijing, a total of $1.9bn had been raised from the international community to fight the disease in the worst-affected countries. The largest donations - $334m - came from the US and the European Union pledged about $260m.
