Australian dollar suffers fall from favour

The Australian dollar, once the darling of the foreign exchange market, has become its whipping boy as fears of a sharp slowdown in the global economy have forced investors to abandon the currency.

On Friday, the Australian dollar fell 12.7 per cent against the yen to Y57.75 and lost 8.3 per cent against the US dollar to $0.6183.
