With a barrage of publicity, China on Friday announced it had chosen the perfect pair of pandas to give to rival Taiwan, piling pressure on a Taiwanese government struggling to decide whether to accept them.

The pandas, chosen from a pool of 23 candidates for the mission to tighten ties across the Taiwan Strait, were selected for their cuteness, character and compatibility after a series of genetic tests and trial marriages, Beijing officials told a live national broadcast.
