Bush’s papal visit fuels conversion talk

In a public demonstration of their special relationship, Pope Benedict on Thursday broke with protocol by receiving George W. Bush in the Vatican Gardens, reviving a frenzy of speculation in the Italian media that the US president might convert to Catholicism.

Mr Bush, a born-again Christian who has had more papal audiences than any other US president, was believed to be the first head of state visiting the Vatican to be greeted outside the pope’s private study.
