October a cruel month for markets

October has confirmed its reputation as one of the most punishing months for investors, with stocks suffering their worst monthly losses in 21 years in the US and their weakest ever in Japan.

As the worst crisis since the 1930s forced co-ordinated central bank interest rate cuts and government backing for banks in many countries, the only haven for investors has been short-dated government bonds and cash.
