Paulson approved as new Treasury secretary

The Senate approved the nomination on Wednesday of Hank Paulson, the former chairman and chief executive of Goldman Sachs, to be the new US Treasury secretary, paving the way for his formal swearing-in by President George W. Bush.

The swift conclusion to the confirmation process came after prominent Democrats endorsed him, while criticising the Bush administration’s economic record.
