European utilities: Supply remains unsolved problem

Energy has surged to the top of the European Union’s agenda, prompted by fears over supplies and the state of competition in its electricity and gas markets.

High oil prices, a rising dependence on imported fuel, the growth of national energy “champions”, concerns over carbon dioxide output and divisions over nuclear power compound the EU’s woes.
