White House blames local issues for losses

The White House sought on Thursday to play down suggestions that two electoral setbacks reflected on Barack Obama’s political standing, after the president awoke on the anniversary of his election victory to the news of two comprehensive Democratic defeats in governor’s races.

Voters in state elections in New Jersey and Virginia sent Republicans into gubernatorial offices previously held by Democrats, in what the Republican party and analysts said was a sharp rebuke to Mr Obama and his administration.
