Joaquim Chissano, who presided over Mozambique’s emergence from a long civil war, emerged as the first winner on Monday of the Mo Ibrahim award for leadership in Africa.

The prize – awarded for the first time this year – is worth $5m (£2.5m, €3.5m) over 10 years and comes with an additional $200,000 a year thereafter.
