Analysis: Bush tries to buy some time

George W. Bush on Tuesday night expanded his administration’s justification to send more troops to Iraq by warning Congress that defeat would lead to a wider regional conflict in which extremists backed by Iran would pose as great a danger to the US as al-Qaeda.

In his State of the Union address, the US president appealed to Congress to give his new Iraq strategy a “chance to work”.
