The head of Hong Kong’s Catholic Church is indeed cut from a different cloth than the territory’s other religious leaders, who tend to be apolitical and discreet. Cardinal Zen, by contrast, has been a thorn in the side of both the Hong Kong and Chinese governments on a range of issues, from democracy and religious freedom to educational reform.
