Signs of stability boost sterling

The pound rose to its highest level of the year against the euro and advanced against the dollar this week as hopes grew that the UK economy might be responding to aggressive monetary policy loosening.

UK house prices showed continued signs of stabilisation while news of the first growth in industrial production in 14 months prompted the UK’s National Institute for Economic and Social Research to say the recession had passed through its trough in March.
